Things are going alright; got a show tonight, the arm is still a little tender and gets tired pretty easily (for those that don't know, I was recently attacked by 70 pound pit bull who got my arm pretty good). Production school is going pretty well, we have recently been learning about intervals which has been really cool. We are mid way through the eight weeks of class and I can definitely see some growth in my production/musical knowledge. It's been great! and I'm very excited to continue learning. I'm also all set up for the fall semester for school and after the fall I will have one semester till graduation! (at least from that school that is). So...things are well! Wish all the best for the blogosphere out there! I'm hoping to add another section to my story pretty soon, I've got some ideas just haven't decided where I want to go with it yet.

Till next time blogosphere!

-Joel

Love's lost (a developing short story)

Lucille walked briskly up to Reginald grazing his left cheek with the palm of her hand. “I just can't take it reg! Know me or don't know me at all" she says. Lucille shifts her weight and turns around trickles of tears rolling down her cheeks past her mouth. She swiftly walks away holding back from turning around to Reginald’s pale white oblong face. "What to do" he wonders as he stares after his love as she gainfully entered the shadows. Reginald decides to let her go and give her time, continuing down the cobblestone walkway solemnly beside himself. Reginald gasps reliving the moments previous in his mind. Minutes later a familiar sound comes to form ring ring. Reginald reaches into his pocket and pulls out a slick black mobile and answers it "Hello" he says. Lucille responds in a high pitched tone on the other end "It's just shameful reg". Reginald responds in a forgive me tone "aw luc I didn't mean it" she interrupts "I will not tolerate that manner reg, I'm a lady "Lucille chastises.”But" he says, Lucille interrupts again "There's no excuse for that behavior, what are our friends going to think? A round the world journey without any purpose, reg are we not civilized?" Reginald responds in kind “You gotta live a little luc it's part of life if you don't take the opportunities that come to you, you'll miss out on them." Lucille scoffs at Reginald "What indignation and I can't believe in such falsies." Reginald responds "It's just one trip you and me love; no cares, no worries what's the harm in it?" Lucille ponders Reginald’s words, images sprawling through her mind of the two of them walking on a sandy beach on a hot summer’s day, breeze flows southward as they walk towards the cliffs just below the eventual sunset.

(This is a work in progress)
Copyright all rights reserved

Well...

While not getting into too much detail, life has not been all the great as of late. Swing gets you movin and shaking and the dance sequences are amazing.

Let's start off with a classic

Tex Beneke and the Glenn Miller Orchestra-In the Mood

Benny Goodman & His Orchestra - Sing Sing Sing

The verb "to swing" is also used as a term of praise for playing that has a strong rhythmic " groove" or drive.

Swing music, also known as swing jazz or simply swing, is a form of jazz music that developed in the early 1930s and had solidified as a distinctive style by 1935 in the United States. Swing uses a strong anchoring rhythm section which supports a lead section that can include brass instruments, including trumpets and trombones, woodwinds including saxophones and clarinets or stringed instruments including violin and guitar; medium to fast tempos; and a "lilting" swing time rhythm. Swing bands usually featured soloists who would improvise a new melody over the arrangement.

-Taken from Wikipedia

Count Basie Orchestra Swingin' the Blues

Duke Ellington - Between lessons they would teach us how to break dance.

I found this video, which was a great lead in to the blog today

<th="425" param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tICestGPPbs&hl=en&fs=1">

which brings me to what artist got me into music (well it was actually two groups)
Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5

Yep that's right the king of pop is the catalyst for my music addiction. Starting from the early years of off the wall and Dancing Machine, I was hooked. Sporting my Captain EO glasses as a kid, I would rock out to MJ tapes all the time.

For those who are not aware of what Captain EO was here's the videos

Gregg Gillis: Pioneer or Pirate?

PREFACE: This is a paper I am working on for english, thought I'd share it with the blogosphere for this weeks edition to the blog. First draft of the profile was due yesterday which went pretty well, final draft is due tomorrow. Enjoy!

Known throughout the world under the synonym “Girl Talk” Gregg Gillis has created an interesting career for himself. Gillis started out going to school to focus on tissue engineering while making music on the side for recreation. Based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Gillis has changed the face of a relatively new form of music called mash ups. In doing so he has caused waves of controversy and laid the groundwork for quite a few legislation battles to come.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 220px; height: 165px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_mFrbZMdSZnQ/SYCHs04JUmI/AAAAAAAAADA/aSH-FBbwhPM/s320/220px-Gregg_gillis.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296382365965832802" />
(Photo taken by Michael Ray)

Though the definition has changed over the years mash ups are defined as a song or a composition created from a combination of the music from one song with the accapella from another. Mash up’s is also known as a song created out of pieces of two or more songs, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the music track of another .[1] Mash ups generally only hold about 30 seconds of one specific song, just enough to get your attention and then it is onto the next song. Mash ups are generally upbeat to keep the flow of the mix moving. For the most part there are about twenty to thirty songs into a single track. Most Mash ups are very complex and technically are quite time consuming to put together.
Gillis has had a long career organizing and adapting songs with his special mix treatment.
Gillis contends that his music is merely a homage to the artists songs he uses. It seems in strange irony that the record label and the Recording Industry Association of America would be the ones to question Gillis’s music and his special treatment. Gillis has stated “Most of my audience is aged 18 to 25 and I know they haven’t heard many of the songs that I sample,” he says. “They might not go out and buy a James Taylor album just because I use a bit of one of his songs, but at least a new generation now know who he is.”[2] He goes on to say “I never sample anyone ironically, and I never want to be tongue-in-cheek. I understand that some of these songs are cheesy or corny or tacky to people, but I try not to think about music in those terms any more. I feel like everything has its place. It’s entertainment. And, for me, it has always been about one thing , celebrating the world of pop.”[3] With that being said Gillis has been at the forefront of the mash up movement and has been celebrated and awarded throughout that community for his efforts. Because of his mash up style to some Gillis is viewed as “the music industry’s worst nightmare: a well revered artist on a populist and decidedly anti-capitalist bent.”[4] While this may be true to some extent, Gillis views it differently, “I spend a lot of time reading about ‘Fair Use’ on the internet,” he replies with a grin. Under this aspect of American copyright law, designed principally for teaching (and to allow journalists to quote lyrics), Gillis argues that his appropriation of existing pop songs does not deprive their owners of money, but, if anything, brings their music to a new audience.” [5]
A bit of background on this controversy known a copyright laws, copyright laws date back to 1710 but were modernized (with intellectual property) in 1994. Regarding this case the issue of criminalization of copyright infringement is brought into question. Gillis prides himself on being very up to date with what’s called the fair use act of 1976 which permits copy and distribution without permission from the copyright holder if the following factors come into play; the purpose and character of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount and substantiality of the portion of work used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole and the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. [6] Because he only uses samples of the original work and it has proven to help the sales of the original artist. Gillis believes he falls into the later two categories of the fair use act. Recently there have been some legislation hearings over the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) over-stepping their boundaries with their tactics to enforce copyright infringement (Including but not limited to outrageous monetary lawsuits). Gillis’s congressman Mike Doyle spoke out in his favor against the malicious attacks of the RIAA on Gillis and other artist similar to him. Mr. Doyle spoke positively of the adjustments that could be made in the copyright policies to further open up this newly formed genre. [7]
Even throughout all this controversy Gillis has won several awards for his mash up work including time magazine’s top ten albums of the year, Rolling stone’s top fifty albums of the year, blender magazine’s second best recording/album of 2008 and the coveted wired magazine’s rave award for 2007.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 229px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_mFrbZMdSZnQ/SYCH9smGGrI/AAAAAAAAADI/Xr7dFuiFdvU/s320/girl+talk3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296382655800416946" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_mFrbZMdSZnQ/SYCIMnlJ7sI/AAAAAAAAADQ/7UXFuaO1Te0/s320/Girl+Talk4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296382912152334018" />
(Photo’s by Matthew Hickley at the Wired Rave Awards)

One might wonder with all this controversy what makes Gillis so popular. I believe one of the main reasons behind it is that his “off the cuff” performances have become the thing of legends and with a fairly young adult fan base it’s not unlikely that Gillis adheres to a more digital age. Meaning that quite a bit of the Girl Talk’s fame has arisen via word of mouth on message boards, blogs and chat rooms. It’s interesting how an individual so involved in the digital age, has had it turn against him so quickly, currently there are still quite a few companies who will not sell Gillis’s albums including itunes and CD distributor. In a recent interview Gillis mentioned, “I’m in a unique position now where I feel like I’ve gone beyond anything that I originally set out to do. Doing laptop collages as a solo performer is kind of a lonely experience. There’s no Led Zeppelin of laptop collages, you know? There’s nobody to really look up to in the medium. But I’ve been really fortunate, and I’m really happy with how the past couple years have been. I kind of have no goals from here. But that’s not to say I’ve got a lack of motivation. I’m working on new material every day, and I’m excited to branch out a little bit more every day. Maybe even get back to my roots a little bit and get into some more experimental stuff, see how that translates when I work it into my live set. “[8]
Right now Gillis is offering his new album “Feed the Animals” at a pay what you want price. So if you would like to pay nothing for it, you can still pick up the album. It’s a new way to activated creative common licenses. At present no lawsuits are or have ever come against Gillis, we shall have to look forward to see what happens in this developing story.

"Well you must take the A train"

This Blog is dedicated to the new musical called "In The Heights"

But first a story of how i decided to do this blog today. As I was doing my great journey into work this morning I was listening to a CD I just picked up from FYE last weekend called "The fabulous swing collection" and the Duke Ellington song "Take the A train" came on. I kept thinking to myself you know I've heard this in something else recently. I took me a second and then I realized it was "In the Heights" and then I also realized it's blog day, why haven't I ever done a blog about "In the Heights" it's an amazing musical. So here we are!

Opening Number (Both video's one with pictures and one live)

Brief sysnopsis of In the Heights-

In the Heights is a new musical about three days in the life of Washington Heights, a vibrant and tight knit community at the top of the island of Manhattan. It's a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. In the Heights is the tale of a community at a crossroads.
-From Theatermania

The score features hip-hop, salsa, merengue and soul music. The musical's 2008 Broadway production was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards and won the Tony Award for Best Musical at the 62nd Tony Awards.

-From Wikipedia

In the Heights performance at the 2008 Tony awards

Lin-Manuel Miranda (The creator and star of In The Heights) doing his preshow ritual

In the Heights also feature this guys
http://www.sethstewart.net/
Seth Stewart is a phenomenal choreographer from New York who has done everything from music video to nationwide tours.

Plans have now been made to make a movie of this musical that will be released in 2010.

http://www.intheheightsthemusical.com/

-Video of the day-

Moulin Rouge-Elephant Love Medley

Till next time folks

"All right, guys, uh, listen. The blues seriously got me through accounting. I would zone out with my ipod and listen to blues for hours on end as I crunched countless numbers for things like cash flow statements and values of annuities. Trust in the fact that accounting is not nearly as fun as it sounds. So to sum it up without the blues I don't think I would have ever made it through accounting.

A few of my favorite artist are;

Johnny Lang-Lie to me

John Lee Hooker - Boom Boom

Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble-Testify
(SRV is an amazing guitar player)

Albert King-Blue Monday

Blues Traveler-But Anyway

BB King - How Blue Can You Get

And of course the Blues Brothers

Video of the week

West Side Story-Prologue
(Finger snaps baby)

Till next time folks! What initially started as a joke/loose affiliation soon stuck as edIT, Boreta, Kraddy and Ooah found themselves frequently playing the same shows and eventually tag teaming during back to back time slots. This eventually led to the four man sonic onslaught of ferocious bass, head cracking drums and infinitely complex rhythms. A proverbial Voltron effect on stage. Taking influences from hip-hop, experimental, and dance genres, The Glitch Mob have crafted their own form of futuristic dance floor hip-hop that has been "slaying" audiences world wide. Their live sets reinvent the dj “tag-team” concept with four performers on stage at once, interacting like a jazz combo, each taking the lead at intuitive moments, interweaving theirown sounds, and remixing everything on the fly. The result is a sound distinctly their own, blending the deep head nod of hip-hop with serious bass music, throwing genre distinctions out the window. The Glitch Mob has been one of the cornerstones of this new electronic hip hop movement that has emerged from Glasgow to Montreal and back to Los Angeles. Taking a nod from the resurgence in the instrumentalhip-hop "beats" movement, the Glitch Mob has injected a great sense of dance floor sensibility into thescene and crafted their own niche as new school dance floor destroyers. Members of The Glitch Mobhave individually released music on their own imprint Glitch Mob Unlimited which is a subsidiary of LosAngeles' Alpha Pup Records. They plan to release their first full length album in 2009.

Videos of the Glitch Mob

<object height="344" I think it's fitting to use this video now as the musical symbolizes the very embodiment of what's wrong with capitalism, bureaucracy and corporate mismanagement thats going on in today's society.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urinetown

Hunter is the brother of Sutton Foster whos rise to broadway fame was the story of fairytales. After several other actresses came and went as the lead in the 2002 broadway debut of Throughly Modern Millie, Sutton was picked from chorus (a move almost unheard of on broadway) to be lead. Hunter was also seen as seymour in Little shop of horrors and Leo Bloom in the producers.

Sutton Foster (Amazing Voice, Chills Guaranteed)
I love her facial expressions
Thoroughly Modern Millie "Gimme Gimme"

Next up

Poetry video of the week!

Saul Williams - Not In Our Name (The Pledge of Resistance)

New Music

Evil Nine-All that Cash

Evil Nine - All The Cash (ft. El-P) (Alex Metric Remix)

Evil Nine's Bio

Don't be surprised if Brighton based Evil Nine and their forthcoming album They Live! does for zombies what Daft Punk did for robots. With stomping electro drums, '80s Italian horror-movie synths, dirty punk basslines, and a wanton disregard for genre rules, the infamously subversive dance/electronic duo create an unstoppable soundtrack for the new virtual zombie revolution.

The title track (and first single) They Live! pays irreverent homage to cult director John Carpenter's classic 1988 sci-fi ghoulfest They Live with its ultra-catchy vocoder chorus ("They walk, they lie, they love, they live!/They wake, they fall, they cry, they live!/They fight, they fail, they die, they live!"). "We love that film and the weird, crunchy, stripped-down analog-electronic scores John Carpenter creates," Beaufoy says. "I've had a massive fascination with zombie films since I was a teenager," Pardy adds, which probably explains why they also recruited cult artist Dan Mumford (known for his infamous sicko album art for Gallows and other punk/metal classics) to create the gory horror-show like album art for this particular album.

The album itself features a number of surprising collaborations, foremost is Def Jux's radical mastermind El-P, whose brutal spitting transforms the apocalyptic slammer "All The Cash."

We hooked up with him after our DJ set at Coachella last year and really got along," Pardy says. "If there was one rapper we wanted to work with, it's El-P. And he was up for something different: I don't think he's much of a dance-music fan, but he's very open-minded musically." Elsewhere, Beans (of Anti-Pop Consortium) turns "Set It Off" into a Goth-meets-hip-house burner, while David, vocalist of Kitsuné buzz band Autokratz, adds melodic New Wave melancholy to "The Wait." "I'm not sure what David's singing about," Beaufoy admits. "I think it's about getting laid after a gig and trying to slip away quietly to avoiding any awkwardness." Additionally Seraphim (from Brooklyn indie-electro seditionaries No Surrender) and Bristol scenester Emily Breeze also make crucial cameos. "To us, Emily's the female Danzig," Pardy explains. "It was great having her make ballsy punk-rock-chick noise over us pretending to be a rock band. We always like to push people to do something completely new."

Creating this army of like-minded iconoclasts is all part of Evil Nine's plan to confound expectations. To that end, They Live! features pounding tracks that will work in any club, but filtered through unexpected influences spanning '80s cock rock, The Cure, early Prince, krautrockers Cluster, Can and Tangerine Dream, vintage noise punkers Suicide and Black Flag, and newer sonic saboteurs TV On The Radio and Queens of the Stone Age. As such, "Behemoth" welds Timbaland rhythms to Black Sabbath heaviness; "Feed On You" comes out somewhere between Beverly Hills Cop and a phantom death march; "Dead Man Coming" loops soundtrack composer/Goblin member Fabio Frizzi's theme from Zombie Flesh Eaters with ragga rudeness courtesy Toastie Taylor of U.K. rap crew New Flesh; "The Wait," meanwhile, incorporates the experiments of Paul Lansky, the early synth pioneer whom Radiohead sampled on "Idioteque." "He's a mad Princeton professor who experiments with strange noises," Beaufoy explains. "We're obsessed," Pardy says. "We can usually find something positive and inspiring about most of the music out there, we then fuck it up and twist it into our own thing." Equally individual will be Evil Nine's kinetic new live show: it features Pardy and Beaufoy singing and playing dueling bass guitars, synthesizers, samples onstage, an actual human drummer, fittingly spooky visual phantasmagoria along with group's new full-length They Live!—a worthy successor to their 2005 album debut You Can Be Special Too, one of the most acclaimed electronic albums in recent memory.

Also...
MGMT-Kids

Artist of the week
James Lavelle

James Lavelle (born 1974 in Oxford, England) is a DJ, electronic recording artist and record label boss. He is best known for producing work in the trip hop, breakbeat and house music genres.

Born into a family with a strong tradition of music, Lavelle first began by learning the cello with his Granny in Oxford.

While attending Cherwell Upper School, Lavelle's music career started at 15 when he ran block parties in Oxford. At only 18 he started the Mo' Wax label, taking the name from his club night at the time, Mo' Wax Please. Around the same time he started the That's How It Is night with Gilles Peterson, which went on to become one of London's longest running nights.

In 1996 Mo' Wax released one of electronic music's most celebrated albums, DJ Shadow's seminal Endtroducing...... Soon after this Lavelle started work on an album with DJ Shadow under the name UNKLE. The resulting release Psyence Fiction featured collaborations with Richard Ashcroft, Mike D, Badly Drawn Boy and Thom Yorke. In 2003, he released a follow up to Psyence Fiction, titled Never, Never, Land, though this album saw DJ Shadow replaced by Richard File as the second full time member of UNKLE. It featured collaborations with 3D of Massive Attack and Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age among others.[1]

He is a long time resident at Fabric in London, mixing the inaugural Fabric Live mix album.[2] He has also mixed two progressive house albums for Global Underground.

He has produced a number of film soundtracks, including Sexy Beast. Also an in demand remixer, he has reworked tracks by Garbage, The Verve, Beck and Massive Attack.[3]

In an August 2006 interview with The Skinny, Lavelle revealed that he's working with Chris Goss and Autolux on the follow up to Never, Never, Land, entitled War Stories. Of the album's direction, he said “It’s rawer than '‘Psyence Fiction’' and Never, Never, Land although it’s more in the vein of the traditional singer/songwriter. If the first record was UNKLE does hiphop and the second record was UNKLE does electronic, then this one is like UNKLE does rock, but it’ll hopefully still have its continuity.”[4]

Of other forthcoming projects, he revealed “I’m working on a film with Darren Aronofsky at the moment. It’s a collaboration between me and Clint Mansell who did the score, it’s to remix the score and do a whole new DVD package, the film is unbelievable. I’m working on a documentary about Abel Ferrara as well.”

He has recently finished working alongside his brother Aidan Lavelle on the soundtrack for the movie of the popular sci-fi series The X Files.

(Taken from Wikipedia)

Upcoming shows

28 Years Later-12/25
Legends-NYE
Evil Nine-2/8

Thanks all for now!

To infinity and beyond!

Hey Peeps!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 241px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_mFrbZMdSZnQ/SUAqOvOX2NI/AAAAAAAAABo/X4-d5h2sA4w/s320/Peeps.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5278265195961506002" />

Just a quick blog today, school is finally done for the semester which means constant blogging and lots more musical adventures. DEMENTO:

Star Trekkin!

A great fan favorite, Star Trekkin was the UK number one single on June 16th 1987. Many people don't know that this song was not written or performed by Dr. Demento. A group call The Firm from the UK is actually the force behind this great classic. It has however, been on several Dr. Demento compilations from his syndicated radio show including Dr. Demento Presents the Greatest Novelty CD of All Time in 1988, Dr. Demento: 20th Anniversary Collection in 1991 and Dr. Demento: Hits From Outer Space in 2006. The genius of this song is it's great use of catchphrase parodies and deliberate misreadings from the famous TV series.

Coldplay

Viva La Vida

I absolutely love the addition of kettle drums and strings in this song. It is almost surreal how beautifully this piece was put together, the atmospheric undertones created a huge extra layer for the background effect. This single was released in May of 2008. The full album was released on June 17th 2008. Viva La Vida in Spanish means Long Live Life or Live the life, the band took the name from the Painting by Artist Frida Kahlo. It sold 125,000 copies on its first day on the selves and is currently the #1 single in the UK.

Movie Review

3.75 Stars out of 5

Blade Runner

What an excellent film!

The movie is directed by Ridley Scott ( Thelma & Louise, Black Hawk Down and Gladiator) and Stars Harrison Ford and Sean Young. It's interesting to see the similarities that the replicants (villains of the movie) have to the Joker and Harley Quinn. Both wear face make up and have acrobatic like attack skills. In Blade Runner the replicants are highly skilled androids that have a short life span. The idea for these characters came from the play R.U.R. also known as Rossum's Universal Robots (interestingly enough I worked as a stage hand for a production of this show at Southern Utah University).

Upcoming Shows

Get Funky

Hosted By: V2 Events

When: Friday Jun 27, 2008at 7:00 PM

Where: The Saltair Amphitheater12498 w. Well the answer is, I was pondering today on what forum I could really express some thoughts and happenings in my life and decided that making a blog seems the most fitting choice. So here we go Blogosphere land!

Reasons for creating this blog in no particular order (topics that will most likely be discussed later on)

1. To talk about school and various other school related topics

2. To talk about work and new developements with work

3. Vader was framed (nuff said)

4.New movies coming out (particularly DC and Marvel Comics movies) and my rating of them.

5. Music (will definitely be a big thing in the blog)

6.Shows coming up

7. Politics (sometimes I get a little political and feel the need to talk about it)

8.Vacations

9.Reactions to other people's blogs and comments on this blog

10. Comic books and dunny's (for those of you who don't know recently I have become something of a regular collecter of the kidrobot toy dunny series)

11. Favortie TV shows (To include, Heroes, Nip/Tuck, Survivor, etc.)

Thats about it for now folks, Till next time!
